### **Technical Data Sheet: Alloy 909 (UNS N19909) Bar Product** #### **Round Bar & Flat Bar** **Overview** Alloy 909 (commercially known as **Incoloy® 909**) is a precipitation-hardenable, low-expansion iron-nickel-cobalt superalloy. It is engineered to maintain high strength and an exceptionally low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) from cryogenic temperatures up to about 650°C (1200°F). This unique combination makes it ideal for applications where dimensional stability under severe thermal cycling is paramount. The bar forms (round and flat) are commonly used for machining critical components in aerospace and high-precision engineering industries. --- ### **Chemical Composition (Weight %)** | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | | **Nickel (Ni)** | 38.0% min | | **Cobalt (Co)** | 13.0 - 17.0% | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | | **Niobium (Nb)** | 4.3 - 5.2% | | **Titanium (Ti)** | 1.3 - 1.8% | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.25 - 0.50% | | **Aluminum (Al)** | 0.03% max | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.06% max | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.00% max | | **Sulfur (S)** | 0.015% max | | **Boron (B)** | 0.012% max | | **Copper (Cu)** | 0.50% max | | **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.015% max | *Note: Niobium and Titanium are critical for forming the gamma prime (γ') strengthening phase during heat treatment.* --- ### **Physical Properties (In Heat-Treated Condition)** | Property | Value | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 8.23 g/cm³ (0.297 lb/in³) | | **Melting Range** | ~1430°C (2600°F) | | **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE)** | 20°C - 500°C: **8.5 x 10⁻⁶/°C** | | **Thermal Conductivity** | 21.0 W/m·K (at 100°C) | | **Specific Heat** | 460 J/kg·K (at 100°C) | | **Electrical Resistivity** | 0.95 μΩ·m | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 148 GPa (21.5 x 10⁶ psi) | | **Magnetic Permeability** | <1.005 (Essentially Non-Magnetic) | --- ### **Mechanical Properties (Typical for Bar Product in Solution Annealed & Aged Condition)** *Properties are typical for sections up to 75mm (3 inches) in diameter or thickness.* | Property | At Room Temperature | At 540°C (1000°F) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Tensile Strength** | 1100 MPa (160 ksi) min | 860 MPa (125 ksi) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 860 MPa (125 ksi) min | 690 MPa (100 ksi) | | **Elongation (in 50mm / 2in)** | 12% min | 15% | | **Reduction of Area** | 25% min | 30% | --- ### **International Standards** Alloy 909 bar products conform to the following key international standards: * **UNS:** **UNS N19909** * **ASTM:** **ASTM B637** - Standard Specification for Precipitation-Hardening Nickel Alloy Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock for High-Temperature Service. * **AMS:** **AMS 5891** - Bars, Forgings, and Rings, Corrosion and Heat-Resistant, Cobalt-Nickel-Iron Alloy (38Co-34Ni-13Cr-4.7Nb-2.7Mo-1.1Ti), Consumable Electrode or Vacuum Induction Melted, Solution Heat Treated, Precipitation Hardenable. **(Note: It is essential to verify the exact chemical requirements with the supplier, as AMS 5891 may have minor compositional variations.)* * **ISO:** **ISO 15156-3 / NACE MR0175** - Suitable for use in sour service (sulfide stress corrosion cracking resistant) environments. --- ### **Product Applications** Round and flat bars of Alloy 909 are primarily used for machining into components where thermal stability and high strength are critical: * **Aerospace & Gas Turbine Engines:** * Turbine Seals and Shrouds * Exhaust Nozzles and Afterburner Components * Compressor Casings and Mounting Rings * Spacers and Fasteners * **Precision Engineering & Instrumentation:** * Laser and Optical System Housings * Measurement Device Frames * Bimetallic Strip Components * **Power Generation:** * Components for Land-Based Gas Turbines * **Automotive (High-Performance):** * Turbocharger Components (e.g., shafts, housings) --- ### **Heat Treatment** Achieving the specified properties requires a precise multi-step heat treatment process: 1. **Solution Treatment:** 980°C (1800°F), followed by rapid cooling. 2. **Stabilization:** 720°C (1325°F) - This step is critical for developing the low thermal expansion characteristic. 3. **Aging:** 620°C (1150°F) - Precipitates the gamma prime phase to achieve maximum strength. **Disclaimer:** This information is for reference purposes only. Mechanical and physical properties can vary with section size, manufacturing process, and specific heat treatment.
